Hj Nasaruddin Hj Zainal started his career with Panasonic in 1982 after graduating from MARA University of Technology. Thereon, he furthered his studies in the USA and graduated with a B.Sc. in Marketing in 1985 and an MBA in 1987. He is currently pursuing his doctoral degree in Islamic Finance at UNIRAZAK, Malaysia. Upon graduation, he started his career in one of the top international Advertising Agency in Kuala Lumpur and handled major corporate accounts like Malaysia Airlines, Malaysian Tobacco Company, PETRONAS and Telecom Malaysia to name a few. He then moved to the Financial Industry where he started his career in insurance with AMAL Assurance now known as Sun Life Assurance Berhad. His last position in the conventional insurance was the Head of Retail Business in CIMB Aviva Assurance. His passion in Islamic Finance brought him to Syarikat Takaful IKHLAS where he served with dedication as the Vice President of Corporate Business, building the Banca Takaful business in the Financial Institutions as well as the Broking, Corporate and Government Treasury business. All in all, he had spent more than 12 years in senior management positions of various divisions in the Insurance and Takaful industry. He has extensive experience in Marketing and Sales, Human Capital Development, Marketing Communications, Customer Relationship Management and Agency Development. In 2013 he was engaged by FAA Berhad an agency under Bank Negara Malaysia and Securities Commission of Malaysia. As a Specialist the key task was to developed Learning Standards for the Insurance and Takaful industry. This position took him extensively to identify and work with the industry’s key players both in Malaysia and the Middle East. The Learning Standards for Islamic Finance - Takaful and Insurance was published in 2014. Presently he is a pursuing his PhD at UNIRAZAK in Kuala Lumpur and he is a member of the teaching faculty at Centre for Commercial Law and Justice, Sunway Business School, Sunway University.

This past summer, after decades of working on Wall Street, I decided it was time I did something about the lack of representation and diversity in the investment management industry. I presented a plan to the President and the Dean of the Business School at the University of Connecticut to expand its current Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) program to go broader and deeper into the current student body, and to share the invaluable experience of managing money in the stock market to as many students as possible. I have taken on this role after 43 years of managing institutional equities for a long array of blue-chip clients based both here in the US and In Europe. At present, our business school population is 2300, but only 22 students at the main campus participated in our SMIF, less than 1%. Of that 90% were seniors and 85% were male. To address this imbalance, my plan is to target three underserved cohorts of the UCONN community: women, younger students, and underrepresented constituencies. My mission is two-fold; to serve as a bridge for the students between the textbook and Wall Street, and to increase access for a more diverse group of students to the powerful experiential learning experience of managing real money in the stock market. I knew this needed to be built over time, and so the Opportunity Fund program came to life.
