Speech Title : From Marine Waste to Renewable Energy: Advancing Resource Recovery for a Sustainable Blue Economy
Dr. Muhammad Hassan is an Associate Professor and interdisciplinary researcher specialising in sustainable energy, waste-to-energy, biomass conversion, circular economy, and environmental sustainability. He holds a BSc in Agricultural Engineering (2011) and has more than 15 years of academic, research, project management, and technology-development experience.
His research focuses on converting agricultural, municipal, and industrial wastes into renewable energy, sustainable fuels, biochar, and other value-added products through technologies including pyrolysis, hydrothermal carbonisation, anaerobic digestion, and advanced resource-recovery processes. He also integrates artificial intelligence and machine learning into energy and environmental systems to improve process efficiency, resource utilisation, and climate performance.
Dr. Hassan has published extensively in international scientific journals and holds 10 U.S. patents, with more than 4,100 citations. His research and innovation activities have been supported by organisations including USAID, UNIDO, the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, and the TARA Climate Foundation.
He founded Pakistan’s first Biomass Cluster, connecting academia, industry, SMEs, and policymakers to promote sustainable energy technologies and circular economy solutions. He has also supervised postgraduate researchers and organised international academic programmes and summer schools.
His current interests include low-carbon energy systems, circular bioeconomy, waste valorisation, AI-enabled sustainable technologies, and climate-resilient resource management. Currently he is working as senior international lecturer at university Malaysia Terengganu, Malaysia.
