Speech Title : Marine Sediment Fingerprints: Revealing Sources and Ecological Risks of Potentially Toxic Elements
Dr. Ong Meng Chuan is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Science and Marine Environment, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Malaysia. He holds a doctoral degree in Marine Pollution, specialising in metal pollution, from the University of South Brittany, France. His academic and research expertise lies primarily in marine pollution, environmental assessment, ecotoxicology, and the application of aquatic organisms as indicators of environmental quality. Dr. Ong’s research focuses on the assessment of potentially toxic elements and other pollutants in marine and aquatic environments, with particular emphasis on their occurrence, distribution, bioaccumulation, and potential impacts on ecosystems and human health. His work encompasses a wide range of environmental matrices, including sediments and marine organisms such as fish, crustaceans, bivalves, molluscs, seaweeds, and seagrasses. Through these studies, he investigates the potential of aquatic organisms as bioindicators for evaluating environmental contamination and ecosystem health. His research also contributes to the assessment of potential human health risks associated with the consumption of contaminated seafood. Through his research, academic leadership, and knowledge transfer activities, Dr. Ong is committed to advancing scientific understanding of marine pollution while contributing to environmental protection, sustainable marine resource management, and the safeguarding of human health.
